So I rode my bike today for some cross training. It was a short ride, 34 minutes and change. But I've always noticed that whenever I ride my bike I feel like it works my heart and lungs harder than my muscles. And I'm less sweaty too. So, which is a better workout, cycling or running? Or, I should rephrase that- How does today's cycling workout compare with yesterday's 5 mile run? First, I guess I can compare calories, 598 cal/34:26 = 17.4 cal/min. Yesterday's run: 810 cal/41:39 = 19.4 cal/min. So if we make a firm calculation (calories divided by time) based on a number that is estimated (calories) in some mysterious unknown way (weight and something else I suppose), what do we end up with? An estimate of calories burned per minute. And since both answers are within 10% of each, I don't think I can reach a firm conclusion.
So how does Endomondo come up with these calorie estimates? I do not know, but maybe by tomorrow I will.
Is there a better way to compare workout intensity between two different activities? I would guess average heart rate. But I don't have one of those fancy monitors, so I can't measure it that way.
